Backup GeneratorsHas this happened to you, that the power is off, you are in total darkness and backup generators are those noisy things that the neighbors have, but not you? There are so many good reasons for people to own backup generators that I thought maybe they should be listed. Even if it helps one person make their mind up and go buy one, then it will be worth it. Trying to survive in difficult times that often accompany power outage is hard enough, but to do so without any help from our techno way of life is actually quite bizarre. We own state-of-the-art electronic equipment that fits nicely into our modern homes, but it is all worth zero when the lights go out. Then we have to resort to smelly, fuel driven back-up generators to provide the very basic necessities. Even though backup generators have improved greatly over the past few years, they are still somewhat prehistoric in this current day and age. They really hi-light our vulnerabilities and egocentricities. If you are unfortunate enough to rely on electricity for all your power needs then your situation is even more dire. One thing that I have learned over this past year though, through all our wild weather and associated problems is that next year, backup generators will be installed and ready and waiting to go to work for me. Sadly, with the state of natural disasters and wild weather seemingly on the increase, these life-saving engines are becoming an essential household item.
Most people will experience at least once these situations, before they go out and purchase backup generators. It seems that after they experience an extended time of sitting in the dark, or trying to see in candlelight, or watching their food spoil in the refrigerator and freezer, and being often cold and miserable at the same time, that it spurs them into action. Even if the budget is small, and it is just not possible to purchase a backup generator that can run a good part of the house, there are many makes and models that will keep the essentials going for you, such as the refrigerator and some lights. Backup generators come in all sizes, shapes and even colors. In fact many can be spotted at quite a distance and identified by its color. But we are not supposed to buy them based on how pretty they look, and in fact there needs to be some careful thought put into choosing the one that is going to be right for your needs. Most people inadvertently seem to buy backup generators that are inadequate for their needs. It is always better to buy a larger unit than you think you need. Over time we seem to grow into the larger units very quickly. It is always recommended that you talk to the professionals before making the final commitment on make and model. You will need to go armed with a list of all the appliances you would like to run. Bear in mind also, that a lot of backup generators do not provide a high enough quality electrical current to safely run a computer. This can be a bit of a trap for houses that contain a lot of state-of-the-art equipment which contains its own micro-computers. There are however, many backup generators that are specifically designed to cater to this need. |
